After reporting a drop to scrap car prices in April, May is unfortunately a similar story. The average value of a scrap car in May decreased by 11%, that’s a €17 reduction compared to April.
Though prices are down month on month, they are however up year on year, as we’d expect as this time last year the impact of the Coronavirus lockdown was really effecting things. Prices are up by a staggering 124% compared to May last year! So far this year average prices have been above €140. A great improvement compared to this time last year, when the impact of the initial Covid lockdown on scrap prices was just beginning to show signs of recovering.

About the CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index
The CarTakeBack Scrap Car Price Index is a rolling monthly index covering the last 13 months. It’s updated monthly using the prices paid for scrap cars at CarTakeBack recycling centres throughout Ireland. We’ve taken into account that cars come in all shapes and sizes, which has an effect on their scrap value, the prices show what the average car would be worth. This means that the index gives a great indication of the movement in the value of scrap cars from one month to another.
The most common vehicle scrapped at CarTakeBack branches across Ireland, for the 11th consecutive month, was the Ford Focus! The average value of Ford Focuses decreased by 24%, to €101 from €133 seen in April.
As we know, the top spot is still being strongly held by the Ford Focus, there have been some changes to the other makes and models of vehicles that compile the top five cars being scrapped with CarTakeBack.
