The graph below may portray a less than positive picture, but considering we ended 2022 with scrap prices at a record high, a drop was inevitable.
While 2023 has seen a consistent period of decline from May, the reality is that the monthly average has maintained a relatively high level, finishing the year on an average of €285.
We only have to go back as far as 2021 to see an overall average price of €190, which puts 2023’s drop into perspective. In short, the majority of people scrapping their car this year have still been able to take advantage of the strong worldwide demand for scrap metal. So you can ponder this chart with a pinch of salt, or maybe a spoonful of sugar!
As we always make clear, as well as the global demand for scrap metals, the average value of a scrap car is influenced by factors such as reusable parts, the make, model, age, weight, condition, and even location of your car. All these factors change over time and as we head into 2024 we can’t be sure how figures will change.
So, onto the fun data!
The most frequently scrapped car with CarTakeBack over the year was the fantastic Ford Focus! The average scrap price for this popular model over the whole year was €307, with a current average scrap value of €249 as we see the year out.
Ford actually takes two places in the top five scrapped cars for 2023. After the Ford Focus, which was a long way in the lead, Vauxhall’s Astra comes second, Volkswagen’s Passat and Golf third and fourth, then back to Ford with their Mondeo in fifth place. The average age of those ‘top scrapped cars’ is around 17 years and as you’ve no doubt worked out, the most popular car sold 17 years ago was of course the Ford Focus. Data from SIMI shows the sales of the Ford Focus outstripped any other model at that time, which of course explains its high numbers now ready for recycling.
Silver claims the top spot for the colour of most scrapped cars this year, with black and blue not too far behind. The grey shade that started to become so popular in the 2000’s is the next most frequent colour we’ve seen in scrap cars in 2023, with red and white trailing behind.
Petrol cars made up 58% of the vehicles scrapped this year and 41% were diesel. Just 1% covered the hybrid and electric cars we’ve started to process.
