The government has announced a scrappage scheme in Ireland ‘ICE2EV’ for people purchasing a new EV.
The SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) is running the scheme with the aim of removing higher polluting passenger cars from the Irish fleet and replacing them with new fully electric vehicles.
It’s a relatively simple scheme, but there are qualifying rules, so here’s a quick checklist to ensure you are eligible for the grant:
Your Eircode will be required to validate your address so the scheme can allot your grant to the rural or urban category of the grant fund.
The car you intend to scrap must be a private passenger vehicle. It must have an internal combustion engine – petrol, diesel or hybrid – with a registration of 2013 or older. (Old EVs are not eligible for scrappage under this scheme.)
The car you are scrapping must also have been owned by you for 12 months prior your grant application.
Your old car must be taxed and insured at the time of your application and the vehicle log book must be provided.
The NCT must also be valid at the time of application or expired no more than 6 months prior to the application date.
This scheme is only available through a registered EV dealer who will arrange the scrapping of your old car.
The scrappage grant is only available when purchasing a new EV and the dealer will deduct the scrappage amount and the relevant grant from the cost of the new private EV you are purchasing. (SEAI will reimburse the EV dealer for the deducted amount.)

This bit is easy as you don’t have to! The EV dealer you choose to buy your new EV from will handle the application for you.
If your old car is eligible for the scheme as we’ve described above, all you have to do to start the process is choose your new car – it must be an EV (a new M1 BEV registered from 262 onwards). The EV can be priced up to €60,000 if your application is submitted and approved before 31 July at 6pm. From 1 August 2026, the maximum eligible price is €50,000.
Your new EV must be registered privately and remain so for at least 6 months.
The dealer will arrange scrappage and submit the grant application on your behalf.
