Ford Europe are working with DHL and are producing electric vans for use in deliveries and transit. The vans have been called the StreetScooter WORK XL, named as such because the technology is from a German company, also called StreetScooter, who have been creating smaller electric utility vehicles since 2015.

The vans are in production in a factory in Cologne, Germany, which can manage a production level of 3,500 Work XL vans a year. On Ford's partnership with StreetScooter, the Managing Director of Product Development for Ford Europe, Joerg Beyer, said:

“Manufacturing the StreetScooter WORK XL at our plant in Cologne brings together perfectly Ford’s unrivalled expertise in commercial vehicle production along with StreetScooter’s strengths as an agile start-up company.”

The StreetScooter WORK XL van for DHL is based on a Ford Transit van. It has a load volume capacity of 20 cubic meters, and can carry up to 2,800lbs in weight. This means the van can carry around 200 parcels of average size. It's fully emissions-free because they've ditched the combustion engine and the van has been made completely electric. The battery has a range of 124 miles, meaning these trucks can complete an entire shift in metropolitan without needing to be recharged.

The van also has other benefits, because it can be used in quiet zones, green zones, and even indoors at trade fair halls and warehouses.

With DHL embracing electric vehicles, and companies Like IKEA planning a zero emission delivery fleet by 2025, we are on our way to a logistics and delivery industry that is kinder to the environment.
